    Operating principle of deamination membrane system 


    “Deamination membrane technology for high ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment” is successfully listed in the Guidance Catalogue of Jiangsu Province of Water Pollution Control Technology. 


    Deamination membrane, with hydrophobic hollow fiber array (made of high-molecular polymer material) intertwining on the water distributor with large number of channels, is enclosed in membrane housing together guide baffler.  


    When CPS deamination membrane system operates, the wastewater containing ammonia nitrogen flow in the shell pass of membrane module (outside of hollow fiber membrane) and acid adsorption liquid flow in the tube pass of membrane module (inside of hollow fiber). When PH in wastewater or temperature is increased, abovementioned balance will move on the right side, ammonium ion NH4+ will turn into free gaseous NH3 which then enter acid adsorption liquid phase in tube pass from the wastewater phase in shell pass through microspores on the hollow fiber surface, and adsorbed by acid fluid, then immediately turn into ionic state NH4+. 


    After PH and temperature of wastewater is maintained above 11 and 35℃-45℃ separately, NH4+ in wastewater phase would incessantly turn into NH3 and migrate to adsorption liquid phage. The ammonia nitrogen concentration in wastewater will constantly reduce until up to customer satisfied standard. On the other hand, since acid adsorption liquid phase only contains acid and NH4+, and pure ammonia salt would be formed. After continuous cycles, it will reach a certain concentration, and thus can be recycled. Basically air stripping tower shares the same operating principle with deamination membrane and equally, under alkaline condition and specified temperature condition, ammonia-containing wastewater would firstly enter air stripping tower, and NH4+ in wastewater would turn into NH3. Simultaneously, blow large volume of air to the water to reduce the partial pressure of NH3 in water, and it take away. The air containing NH3 will enter sulfuric acid adsorption tower, and get adsorbed by sulfuric acid, and convert ammonia sulfate. The difference lies in that with air stripping technology, NH3 separation and adsorption are completed in two steps.    


    For deamination membrane equipment, however, NH3 separation and adsorption is simultaneously completed at the outside and inside of membrane. Dispensing with traditional air blowing, it can cut down electric consumption. As the manufacturer of deamination membrane system, CPS deamination membrane technology has been successfully applied in the ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment project of Jiangsu Liming Group, its engineering equipment have the energy consumption only 10% of traditional stripping method, and the ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency increased more than 20%.

    Explanation of parameters 


    Ammonia nitrogen effluent: Air stripping tower cannot ensure removal efficiency to the extreme limit and ammonia nitrogen can not go lower than 40ppm. Because of its extremely high gas-water ratio (single-stage ratio is 1:2000), the air would conduct heat exchange with water and water will cool down quickly; while CPS ammonia removal system requires certain temperature  condition (≧30℃). The air stripping tower can be connected at most two stages in series, and more stages would become meaningless since the raw water temperature will be reduced, and when the ammonia nitrogen in water is below 40ppm, the ammonia can be hardly removed by air stripping. 


    Investment cost: In fact, the investment cost in air stripping tower is far higher than deamination membrane. Taking an ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment project in Tianjin as an example, a 10t/hr deamination system designed with two-stage air stripping device, contracted by a Japanese-invested environmental protection company in Jiangsu, have its equipment investment up to 4 million yuan. 


    Operation cost: PH regulation and temperature requirement are basically identical, and the difference lies in the electric charge. Taking an ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment project in Tianjin as an example, a 10t/hr deamination system designed with two-stage air stripping device, with single-stage gas-water ratio of 1:2500, can remove ammonia nitrogen from 600ppm to 40ppm. The system is equipped with two 37KW fans (54KW in total) and with 17KW auxiliary system, therefore, the system is totally designed with a power of 71KW. The electricity consumption is around 4.26 yuan/ton of water (at the cost of 0.6 yuan/kwh). 


    Inlet water temperature: Deamination membrane is subject to certain limitations, its temperature should not be too high. The air stripping tower has no temperature limitation, the higher the temperature, the better the efficiency. 


    Floor space occupied by equipment: Air stripping equipment occupies far more floor space than the deamination membrane, and mostly evidently, the equipment is quite high (normally more than 6m, and it may result in ammonia leakage, generally only installed and operated outdoor). Taking an ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment project in Tianjin as an example, a 10t/hr deamination system is designed with two towers, each with diameter of 3m and 6.27m high. A sulfuric acid adsorption tower would have the diameter of 1.6m and 6.27m high.
